"Do I need IVF?" This is the big scary question. Many patients assume fertility treatment equals expensive, invasive IVF immediately. But that’s rarely the case.
IUI: Giving Nature a Nudge
IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) is simple. I tell my patients to think of it as "shortening the journey" for the sperm. We wash the sperm in our lab to get the best swimmers and place them directly inside the uterus when you are ovulating.
- Is it painful? No, it feels like a pap smear.
- Cost: Much lower than IVF.
- Who is it for? If your tubes are open and the sperm count is decent, we start here.
IVF: When We Need More Control
IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) is for when nature isn't cooperating. We take the eggs out, fertilize them in the lab, and put the embryo back.
- Outcomes: IVF success varies with age, diagnosis, egg and sperm factors, embryo development, and the treating center.
- Who may be assessed for it? People with blocked tubes, significant sperm-factor concerns, or unsuccessful previous treatment may be advised to discuss IVF.
My Approach
I am conservative. I won't push you to IVF if I think IUI has a good shot. But I will also be honest—if IUI is wasting your time and money, I will tell you to move on. It's about finding the fastest, safest path to your baby.
